If you think a farmers life is easy think again. You try growing something edible in your own back yard and you will find that it is one of the most frustrating and difficult things to do. You cultivate your little patch, add fertilizer, seedlings, water regularly, try not to use pesticide and then as a few measly vegetables start to grow insects ravage your pride and joy leaving you battling to provide enough food for just one day let alone regular food supply. Farmers' problems are multiplied a thousand times. Drought, fire and pests are just a few minor setbacks. They can grow crops to feed thousands of people, planted in soils that normal people would not even consider using. They have huge outlays to gamble against nature to produce their crops. Massive amount of money are needed to buy tractors and other machinery as well as purchasing seeds fertilizers, pest control and water. If all goes well and they finally dodge all the havocs of drought, fire, floods or storms their precious cargo still has to be picked, packed and sold and bank loans repaid. Governments control water access and supermarkets hammer prices into the ground because they can import the item for x dollars cheaper overseas. We should be supporting our farming community more and governments should provide as much assistance as needed to help them in times of trouble. They are indespensible.
